These images are part of PUSH / PULL at
The Garage on the Grove in Uptown Sacramento April 9–May 14, 2022.
The show features new abstract photographs that are born of the Garage rafters and in-process installation materials. Rich color shifts and striking shallow depth of field comfort with a pleasing, velvety texture, but also challenge you to pull together a sense of the whole from mere fragments.
PUSH / PULL builds on ideas I have perviously explored on the relationship between photographic images and the physical spaces in which they are viewed. The pictures are often hung either too close to the viewer or too far, and sometimes are partially revealed or just out of sight. This is the result of a significantly reworking of the Garage’s interior, so visitors find themselves, not in a light and airy gallery, but in a narrow passageway of obscured sightlines and controlled movement, pressed close to the walls and pushed forward into the shadows.
